Steve Buyer, U.S. Rep. from Indiana (Republican), created a charitable organization in 2003, the Frontier Foundation, to award scholarships. Since that time it has raised $880K, but given no scholarships and donated only $10K (to his lobbyist buddies). Instead it has funded golfing trips for Buyer and his lobbyists.

The foundation has yet to award its first scholarship, and it has handed out only $10,500 in charitable grants. Of those grants, $4,500 went to a cancer fund run by the chief Washington lobbyist for Eli Lilly and Co. That lobbyist, Joe Kelley, said he is refunding the money because Lilly is among the groups that have supported Buyer's foundation. In addition, the foundation gave $1,450 in 2008 to the National Rifle Association Foundation.Rep. Steve Buyer's Frontier Fund has raised over $600K (net expenses) and will grant scholarships after it has raised $1M so that the fund is self-sustainable (3+/0- justifications) Added on 2009-10-18 19:40:31 by factor
